HFT Stuttgart has offered a bachelor programme in KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) since the summer semester of 2011. Modern architecture and urban planning are characterized by increasingly demanding energy efficiency and engineering requirements, and this calls for sustainable architecture which blends integrated technical solutions with quantitative evaluation techniques. The aim of this practically oriented programme is therefore to enable students to see complex issues in their architectural, constructional, energetic and thermodynamic context and incorporate the resultant insights into the design process.
Global resource consumption and the onset of climate change require us to adopt a more sustainable approach to our environment. This involves the clustering of expertise in complex fields ranging from architecture, urban planning, structural engineering, material science and building services to infrastructure concepts and new legislation such as the German Energy Efficiency Act (based on the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) – which in turn requires the establishment of an entirely new profession. The bachelor programme in KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) therefore aims to empower students to understand and contextualize complex issues, take a variety of perspectives into account and use a methodical approach to develop practical, pioneering solutions.
The seven-semester programme is divided into a foundation course and a main course. It includes an External Study Project in the fifth semester and ends with the student writing their Bachelor thesis (dissertation).
Applicants are only eligible for enrolment in the
KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) programme if they complete a
pre-study internship of at least two months in length. The
internship does not have to be completed prior to the submission of
their application but must be proven to have been completed by the
programme start date at the latest.
The primary goal of the pre-study internship is for prospective students to ensure that they have made the right career choice and possess a sufficient level of motivation and aptitude. It should also give them opportunities to gain initial knowledge and experience of potential areas of work in the field of energy-efficient construction. The internship is therefore to be spent at a firm of planning consultants or another business whose areas of activity are of relevance to the KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) programme.
Climate engineers fill the current gap between “all-rounder” architects and highly specialized planning consultants. There is huge worldwide demand for planners who combine the building physics expertise of an engineer with a keen eye for architecture and design – and the KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) programme responds to that demand. Graduates who leave HFT Stuttgart as a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) are qualified to work as an independent engineer and/or energy consultant throughout all disciplines of energy-efficient construction and in an international context. They can also opt to build on their B.Eng. with a master’s degree.

The university’s International Office is available to provide advice as students prepare to study abroad. They can also opt to go abroad for their Supervised Practical Study Project or spend a semester studying at a foreign university.
The bachelor programme in KlimaEngineering (Climate Engineering) complies with the quality guidelines published by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education, Research and Art and has been an accredited programme since the winter semester of 2013. Our engineering degree programme KlimaEngineering accredited by ASIIN e.V. also satisfies the criteria for Bachelor degree programmes specified in the EUR-ACE® Framework Standards for the Accreditation of Engineering Programmes.
