Module 6: Smart Resources & Resilience

Air, water and soil are basic resources being necessary for life. Cities are smart when citizens visibly benefit through
controlling and eliminating emissions and through reducing the ecological footprint of settled areas. With regard to
Climate change more and more cities need to solve new environmental challenges – they need to become resilient
against storm, flooding, drought, fire.


Learning Unit 6.1 Smart Water & Waste Management

Beside of agriculture and industries cities are the main consumers of valuable drinking water. In many parts of the world urban citizens are not only suffering from lack of fresh water, but also from inferior quality leading to health problems. Water tables are dropping almost everywhere while wastewater is not treated and regenerated, while rainwater is not collected and while too much water is unnecessarily wasted e.g. through inferior irrigation systems
Students will have the ability to:
• learn about the technical components of water supply schemes, i.e.
• Water sources and water resource management including sustainable methods of desalination
• Water treatment
• Water conveyance
• Water storage
• Water distribution
• learn about the present challenges of smart water supply, e.g.
• Water losses
• Water quality
• learn about the main components of wastewater systems , i.e.
• Wastewater collection
• Wastewater treatment and disposal
• Sludge treatment and disposal
• learn about the latest developments in wastewater engineering, e.g.
• Advanced treatment processes
• Re-using treated wastewater
• learn about organizational models for water supply and wastewater entities
• learn about a typical project life cycle and the procurement process for a water / wastewater project
• learn about operation and maintenance aspects for water and wastewater systems
• learn about legal and economic aspects to be considered in the context of water and wastewater systems

Learning Unit 6.2 Pollution Prevention & Recovery Strategies

Many cities are suffering from pollution of the air, the soil, of water bodies and of groundwater. Citizens demand recovery from existing pollution and provisions in order to avoid further exposure to those threats.
Students will have the ability to:
Initiate Environmental impact assessment studies
• Evaluate risks induced by contamination of water/groundwater and soil
• Release specific measures to remediate existing contaminations / inherited burdens
• Suggest measures to avoid future emissions and damages
• Know the cost impacts, legal regulations and experts

Learning Unit 6.3 Smart Urban Biosphere & Habitat

Smart Cities understand themselves as largely self-containing biospheres with far smaller ecological footprints in terms of emissions and supply network. Smart City managers understand urban agglomerations not only as a manmade artificial but also as a vital natural habitat
Students will have the ability to:
• address the challenges and opportunities that occur when governing and managing urban biospheres, in a concerted, synergistic manner
• facilitate cities with greater social-ecological resilience in the context of global environmental change
• connect acclaimed scientific researchers, foresighted policy-makers, visionary planners, and environmental practitioners
• integrate cities and the ecosystems of which they are part
• consolidate political commitment to sustainable development and in particular, the ecosystem approach to planning

Learning Unit 6.4 Resilience Strategies & Measures

The impacts of climate change are felt even harsher in cities of low and middle-income nations, where uncontrolled growth in high-risk areas is the norm…highly developed and industrialized urban areas are relying on structures and systems that are incapable of coping with climate change risks such as natural disasters.
Students will have the ability to:
• Identify risks and threats regarding flood, drought, rising sea levels, hurricanes (in combination with flood)
• Specific combination of risks in different climate zones and different urban environments
• Know state-of-the-art measures in order to minimize respective risks and threats
