The Laboratory for Geodetic Measurement Techniques includes instruments for modern surveying techniques e. g. laserscanner, GNSS-receivers, reflectorless distance-measuring units, motorised tachymeter systems (total stations, robotic systems), video tachymeter systems, scanning totalstations graphical fieldbooks and UAS (unmanned aerial systems). Additional the laboratory includes all other typical surveying instruments like levels, theodolites and tachymeters. The instruments and all other surveying accessories are arranged in two rooms.

The equipment is in use for over 120 supervised practical exercises in the Bachelor study programmes „Vermessung und Geoinformatik“ (Surveying and Geoinformatics), „Informationslogistik“ (Informationlogistics), „Bauingenieurwesen“ (Civil Engineering) and „Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen" (Civil Engineering and Business Management) as well as for the Master programmes „Vermessung“ (Geodesy) and „Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics“.

In numerous Bachelor- and Master-Theses the equipment of the laboratory is used for research, development and projects.
In one of these rooms there are installations of special testing and calibration equipment e. g. collimators and comparators. Additional there are other testing instruments like inclinometers and laserinterferometers available.

Tachymeters / Theodolites, Total-, Multistations

In the laboratory are more than 20 totalstations, 2 electronic precision theodolites and more than 20 analog precision theodolites from the companies Leica, Topcon and Trimble available.

This equipment is completed with numerous additional accessories e. g. prisms, targets, tripods, robotic equipment, etc.

With this large equipment it is possible to manage standard measuring methods as well as integrated surveying (together with GNSS, graphical field books, video cameras), robotic surveying, reflectorless measurements and high precision measurements.


In the laboratory there are about 20 GNSS-receivers available. They are from the companies Garmin, Leica, Topcon and Trimble and can be used in static and kinematic mode. With the additional equipment the usage with different real time services e. g. AXIO-NET-ascos, Leica-SmartNet, Trimble-VRSNOW, Beacon, WAAS/EGNOS are possible as well as postprocessing. The whole GNSS-(GPS) equipment covers the different GNSS measuring methods and therefore the different accuracy categories (PDGPS->0,003-0,05m; DGPS->0,3-3m; GPS-> 3-100m).

Together with tachymeters some of the GNSS-receivers can be used for integrated surveying methods. Others can be used as mobile GIS-systems e. g. with ESRI-ArcPad or Trimble-TerraSync.


In the laboratory 8 digital compensator levels and more than 30 analog compensator levels from the companies Askania, Breithaupt, Fennel, Kern, Leica, Nikon, Wild und Zeiss are available. A large number of levelling staffs, including ten pairs of precision barcode levelling staffs, complete the levelling equipment which allows measurements in both accuracy classes: Engineer Leveling and Precision Levelling.

Graphical Fieldbooks / Field PCs

The equipment of graphical fieldbooks contents five Tablet PCs and more than 10 Field Controllers with Windows or Windows CE System (Leica, Mettenmeier, Panasonic, Topcon, Trimble). All of them can communicate via WLAN / Bluetooth interfaces with external sensors and instruments. With that many flexible applications for research and lecture are possible.

In the Laboratory there are further instruments available which are not listed in the above mentioned categories:

  • Laserscanner (Leica HDS7000, Leica ScanStation P20, Faro Focus3D, Faro Focus 3D X330)
  • Mobile Mapping Hand-held-Scanner (GeoSLAM ZEB1)
  • Scannercamera / TOF-Camera (Mesa Imaging SwissRanger SR4000)
  • Multi-Kamera-Rover (Trimble V10)
  • 3D-Measuring-Systems GOM Atos, GOM Tritop, Faro Freestyle
  • Laserinterferometer (Hewlett Packard HP-5508)
  • Laser distance measuring instruments (Leica Disto)
  • Distance-/Inclination-sensors / „free-hand-tachymeter“ (Trupulse360)
  • Precision nadir-plumb
  • Rotation lasers


The measurements of this measurement systems can be processed with several software packages e.g.:

  • Leica Infinity
  • Leica Cyclone / CloudWorx
  • Topcon Tools
  • Trimble Business Center (TBC)
  • Faro Scene

For these software packages there are numerous licenses available. Additionally there are numerous on-board software packages (Apps) installed on the instruments.

Additional Equipment

The additional equipment contents all „small“ helpful things partially essential for exercises and Bachelor- or Master-Theses, e. g. tapes, plumbs, flagpoles, thermometers, barometers, compasses, inclinometers, field book frames, walkie-talkies, security material (pylons, reflective-vests, warning signs, helmets), marking material, field umbrellas.

Historical Instruments

The over 150-year long history of „Geodesy“ at the HFT Stuttgart leads to a large collection of historical instruments. These historical instruments are not in use for exercises anymore but they are sometimes useful for understanding principle techniques or they are used for exhibitions.
