Description

The Laboratory for Image Understanding and Earth Observation Sensors (LIMES) was established for research, lectures, trainings and workshops in the fields of automatic interpretation and measuring in aerial photos, satellite- and close-range images. The laboratory equipment is leading at German universities and is installed in two rooms.

Both rooms are used for a large number of exercises in the Bachelor study programmes „Vermessung und Geoinformatik“ (Surveying and Geoinformatics) and „Informationslogistik“ (Informationlogistics) as well as for the Master programme "Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics". In numerous Bachelor- and Master-Theses the laboratory is used for research and development.

Hardware

In the laboratory there are all in all 20 PCs available. All workstations offer stereo capabilities and are equipped for all tasks in Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

All workstations offer modern active LCD stereo viewing and are equipped with an additional at least 19'' TFT-Monitor. On all stations Matlab, AutoCAD and MS Office is available as standard software.

A CUBE 3D Stereobeamer (Digital Image Company) with a fixed screen in room 2/222 and a portable screen can be used for every kind of 3D visualisations and 3D presentations. Viewing is possible with polarised glasses in passive mode.

Additional numerous external USB hard disks with up to 1TByte capacity for data storage and transfer are available. With an available tablet PC and one Whiteboard, exercises, lectures and meetings can be supported

Software for aerial photogrammetry

For photogrammetric applications 21 digital photogrammetric software packages of the INPHO GmbH are available (9 full-licenses, 11 lite-licenses). Following applications are licensed:

  • Basic software (Applications Master)
  • Automatic aerotriangulation (MATCH-AT)
  • Automatic generation of digital terrain models (MATCH-T DSM)
  • Automatic creation of ortho photos and automatic creation of ortho mosaics (OrthoMaster+OrthoVista)
  • Semi-automatic building- and road-extraction (inJECT)
  • Editing of digital terrain models generated out from pointclouds, e. g. laser scanning or image matching (DTMaster-Stereo)

Additional available:

  • Stereo measuring in digital photos (SUMMIT-Evolution, 9 full-licenses)
  • Generating digital terrain models with automatic filtering module for laserscan data (SCOOP++, 2 full-licenses )

Software for close-range photogrammetry

For close-range photogrammetry in industrial, architectural or archeological applications the following software packages are available:

  • 10 licenses software Pictran
  • 14 licenses software Photomodeler
  • 1 license software Panoramastudio
  • 2 licenses software iWitness
  • 3 educational licenses software Agisoft Photoscan

Software for remote sensing

For remote sensing following software packages are available:

  • 15 software packages ErMapper (Fa. Earth Resource Mapping), in addition student licenses
  • 15 software packages ERDAS inclusive LPS (for Digital Photogrammetry and in addition further student licenses)
  • 2 licenses of object orientated classifying software eCognition (Fa. Trimble)

Additional equipment

For capturing photogrammetric photos a digital DSLR-camera, two panoramic heads, an UAV PAMS (Germatics GmbH) and a Tritop HD Industrial Measuring System are available.

For the strategy project „Indoor Navigation und Mapping“, 2 Festo Robotino Premium robots have been bought and are already used in lectures. They are equipped with 2 Bumblebee Stereo Cameras,2 Xsens IMUs, 2Kincect 2.0 and can be controlled and respectively communicate via WLAN. One of the robots has an extra Prime Sense Carmine depth-image camera.

As additional hardware 2 Google Project Tango Development Kits for the 3D-recording of rooms are available since September 2015.
